SAFEWAY TO OFFER HIGH-VALUE ELECTRONIC COUPONS; COUPON PROGRAM WILL SAVE SHOPPERS TIME AND MONEY!
CLACKAMAS, Ore., Aug. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway (NYSE: SWY) Stores in Oregon and Southwest Washington will soon offer a unique and valuable way for customers to save money every time they shop! Starting Aug. 15, 1993, Safeway will begin offering the Checkout Coupon program in Oregon and Southwest Washington. The program implementation will take approximately 3 months and will be completed by mid November 1993. Safeway's Checkout Coupon program uses the checkout scanners to "read" what a shopper actually buys, and then prints several customized coupons, each related to that customer's purchases. The customer is given the coupons to use on a future shopping trip. For example, a customer buying a jar of peanut butter may "trigger" a Checkout Coupon certificate for a competing brand of peanut butter, a larger size of the same brand of peanut butter, or a jar of grape jelly. Checkout Coupon certificates, which are handed to customers during the checkout transaction -- along with their change and receipt, have an average face value that is more than 45 percent higher than traditional mass-delivered coupons. "We are confident our customers will like the convenience of receiving a coupon `on the spot' that corresponds to items they are already buying," said Lyle Waterman, vice president and marketing operations manager of Safeway's Portland Division. "Safeway's program will save them money on products they're likely to buy. With virtually no effort on their part," Waterman said. Safeway operates 102 retail stores in this region -- 92 in Oregon and 10 in Southwest Washington, and employs over 9,000 employees. The program was designed by Catalina Marketing Network and is installed in more than 5,600 supermarkets across the country, including Giant Foods, Dominick's, Kroger and Winn-Dixie, which allows the network to reach nearly 80 million shoppers every week. Catalina also provides electronic marketing programs for such well-known consumer goods companies as S.C. Johnson, RJR Nabisco, Kraft General Foods, Tropicana, Nestle Food Corp. and Warner-Lambert Company. -0- 8/12/93 /CONTACT: Bridget A. Flanagan, public affairs manager for Safeway, 503-656-1461/ (SWY)
