SAFEWAY TO 'EGGS-PERIMENT' WITH UNCAGED HEN EGGS

WASHINGTON, June 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Add Denver Safeway stores to the growing list of supermarkets that are now selling eggs that come from uncaged hens -- an alternative to the caged-hen eggs currently being sold in 98 percent of America's grocery stores.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) says most of the eggs produced in the United States come from hens who are crowded into wire "battery" cages so small they cannot spread their wings. Unlike the battery-caged hens, uncaged or "free-roaming" hens are allowed to exercise, scratch for food, preen themselves and lay their eggs in the comfort and security of a nest.
Denver Safeways, like many other supermarkets who now carry uncaged hen eggs, decided to stock these eggs because of increased consumer demand. This demand resulted from a consumer education campaign sponsored by The HSUS. The HSUS campaign is being conducted in Denver and several other cities across the United States.
Dr. Melanie Adcock, director of The HSUS' farm animals department, says Safeway's decision to carry uncaged hen eggs is encouraging. Now, she says, it's up to consumers to show their support for this product.
"We know that consumers will buy these eggs if they're available," Adcock says. "Once grocers realize the high demand for these eggs, they won't hesitate to stock them."
Safeway plans to carry uncaged hen eggs in 70 stores along the front range of Colorado. San Francisco Safeway stores already stock these eggs. Adcock hopes that high sales will encourage other Safeway stores to carry the eggs.
"Safeway has stores in several major U.S. cities," Adcock says. "We hope that they will soon decide to stock these eggs in all of their supermarkets so that millions of consumers will have the opportunity to shop with compassion."
The first delivery of these eggs is scheduled for July 1.
