 SAFEWAY REACHES INTO LOCAL COMMUNITIES, GIVING NEARLY $6 MILLION
 IN DONATIONS DURING 1991; EMPOWERING OTHERS TO HELP THEMSELVES
 BELLEVUE, Wash., March 20 /PRNewswire/ -- The Seattle Division of Safeway Inc. said today it made nearly $6 million in charitable contributions in 1991. Helping those in need is a strong priority and ongoing commitment for Safeway, which believes in giving back to the communities in which it operates. The Seattle Division operates 178 stores located in Washington, Alaska, Idaho, Montana and Milton- Freewater, Ore.
 Listed below is a sampling of the many ways in which Safeway has reached back into its local operating communities to assist others.
 -- Easter Seals -- Safeway's No. 1 corporate charity. In 1991, Safeway employees and customers contributed $1,021,220.22 dollars to the Easter Seal Societies of Washington, Montana, Idaho and Alaska. Safeway employees strive to raise funds on a year-round basis to help return ability to the disabled.
 -- United Way -- As the No. 1 supporter of United Way in the retail grocery industry, Safeway contributes through employee and corporate giving campaigns. In 1991, Safeway donated $449,041 to United Way agencies in Washington, Montana, Idaho and Alaska. This amount represents a 29-percent increase over 1990.
 -- Food Banking -- Providing food for the hungry has always been a priority at Safeway. In 1991, Safeway donated over $4 million worth of nutritionally sound, past pull-dated or damaged products to community food banks throughout its operating states on a weekly basis.
 -- Change for the Hungry -- In accordance with the company's commitment to help feed the hungry, Safeway implemented the "Change for the Hungry" program offering customers the option of donating their spare change to the Salvation Army. With the support of generous Safeway shoppers and corporate contributions, Safeway was able to donate $102,376.47 to this cause in 1991.
 -- Gift of Food -- This highly acclaimed feeding program offered in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties enables Safeway consumers to make a donation to Food Lifeline at the checkout counter by purchasing certificates in increments of $1, $2 and $5. In 1991, Safeway raised $66,374 through this program.
 -- General Cash Contributions to Non-Profit Organizations -- Safeway's corporate giving program does not stop with structured programs and fund-raising campaigns. Each year, funds are set aside to disperse among organizations in need, ranging from health and welfare agencies to the Arts and educational organizations. In addition, store managers oversee their own in-store donation program, which allows them to donate merchandise to local civic and community groups throughout the year. In 1991, the Seattle Division of Safeway Inc. donated $241,262.12 in cash contributions and merchandise to local non-profit organizations.
 -- Community Pride Awards -- In recognition of employees' efforts to volunteer with non-profit organizations in their spare time, Safeway donated nearly $12,000 to charities on their behalf in 1991. Organizations such as Girl/Boy Scouts, volunteer firefighters, rescue teams and community services agencies benefitted from these funds.
 Safeway said it is proud to be able to offer assistance to the communities in which it operates. The Division believes strongly in the importance of helping others and continues to search for new ways to extend a helping hand.
