 PORTLAND, Ore., May 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway officials announced today Grand Opening details for the Safeway MARKETPLACE at the Rose City Center in the Roseway Neighborhood on:
 Wednesday, May 5, 7 a.m.
 Safeway MARKETPLACE at the Rose City Center -- in the Roseway
 N.E. Sandy Blvd & N.E. Freemont Street, Portland
 Portland Mayor Vera Katz and Portland Police Chief Tom Potter will join representatives of the Roseway Neighborhood Association and Safeway Store Manager Art Galego at grand opening/ribbon cutting ceremonies, which will begin promptly at 7 a.m.
 According to Safeway's Galego, "Safeway is especially thankful for the support we received from both Mayor Katz and Chief Potter as we worked out the details necessary to open the very first community policing office ever located inside a retail food store! It's been an honor for Safeway to have worked with city officials, the Portland Police Bureau and neighborhood leaders as we joined forces to make this idea become a reality. Mayor Katz and Chief Potter are strong supporters of the concept of community policing."
 Safeway officials are excited to return to this growing and dynamic northeast Portland neighborhood. The first Safeway markets in northeast Portland date back to the early 1940s and included stores located at 57th & N.E. Fremont; 24th & N.E. Fremont; and 22nd & N.E. Sandy.
 Safeway also operated a store literally across the street from the 53,000-square-foot Safeway MARKETPLACE at the Rose City Center. That store operated until 1972.
 Safeway first began operating stores in the Pacific Northwest in 1921 and currently employs over 9,000 employees in 91 stores in Oregon and 11 in Southwest Washington.
 The Rose City Center Safeway MARKETPLACE:
 -- Will employ over 150 employees
 -- Created 75 new jobs
 -- Will stock over 40,000 items
 The Rose City Center Safeway MARKETPLACE is part of Safeway's five- year, $3.2-billion corporate capital spending program.
 In November 1992, Safeway opened a MARKETPLACE store in Hood River, Ore., replacing a smaller, outdated facility. In addition, Safeway opened three MARKETPLACE stores in 1990; one each in Portland, Gresham and Hillsboro.
 Safeway's MARKETPLACE Stores contain the latest merchandising concepts in grocery retailing and are designed to replicate an outdoor "marketplace" scenario in each of the full-service, specialty departments. The MARKETPLACE decor uses storefront motifs to identify each department.
 The Safeway MARKETPLACE will feature the following full-service specialty departments:
 European Bakery -- A European style, full-service bakery will feature steam-injected baking equipment, specially designed to duplicate the "French secret!" Designed in an open format to allow customers to view the entire baking process, this department illustrates Safeway's commitment to freshness. Both service and freshness are evident in the layout and design of the bakery.
 In addition to authentic French breads, croissants and baguettes, the Safeway bakery is equipped to bake a wide variety of cakes, cookies, breads and pastries -- all baked fresh daily! Fresh donuts (baked fresh daily) will also be featured at 6:30 a.m. each day of the week.
 An expanded line of European baked goods -- all baked fresh throughout the day -- will be available and will include:
 -- Authentic Crusty Breads (sourdough, Italian and grain breads)
 -- An expanded line of cream desserts, made with 100 percent REAL whipped cream.
 -- An expanded line of croissants and French breads. Hot French bread will be available daily, starting at 4 p.m.
 -- Freshly baked muffins.
 A special area within the bakery was designed to allow a full view of Safeway's talented cake decorators as they create "works of art" in frosting!
 Full Service, Custom Floral Department -- Customers will literally walk through a wonderland of floral creations as they enter the store.
 Full-time, professional florists will be on hand to assist shoppers with any and all floral needs. Soon to be equipped with wire service, as well as local delivery service, Safeway's Floral Shops use only the finest domestic and imported exotic plants and flowers. Floral needs -- large and small -- can be easily filled by Safeway's experts.
 Balloons and gift items including, "Fancy Wrap" balloon creations, will also be available in the Floral Department. Visa and MasterCard will gladly be accepted on all floral purchases.
 Expanded, Full-Service European Deli Department -- The Safeway MARKETPLACE will be staffed by professionally trained deli personnel. A wide array of delicious, hot and cold items for lunch, business meetings, dinner parties, snacks or special occasions will be offered.
 The Deli will also feature an extensive selection of restaurant quality, heat-n-serve entrees, gourmet salads, imported and domestic meats and meat pies, cheeses, sandwiches, party trays (featuring meat, cheese and vegetable selections) and desserts, as well as an expanded selection of hot foods for take out.
 Catering Service: Safeway's take-out catering service will offer a wide variety of deli items to satisfy virtually all tastes and special occasions! Party snack tray, fresh fruit trays with imported cheeses, boxed lunches, as well as deli style meat and cheese trays will be available. Visa and MasterCard will gladly be accepted for all Deli purchases.
 Virtually all customer requests can be easily and professionally handled within Safeway's Deli Department. Special departments within the Deli include:
 -- Chinese Kitchen -- Chinese chefs, expertly trained and experienced in the preparation of traditional Chinese food, will offer more than 20 varieties of authentic Chinese food, including dishes prepared in Mandarin and Cantonese style. The delicious selection will include party trays, Chinese bar-b-que, appetizers, soups, rice, noodles and family take-out dinners -- all prepared fresh daily without added MSG!
 -- Pizzeria -- A full-service Pizzeria will offer a huge selection of fresh U-Bake (take and bake) pizzas, custom made to the customer's individual order. Pizzas will feature restaurant-quality sauces and hand-stretched pizza dough at "supermarket prices."
 -- Salad Bar -- The Salad Bar will feature more than 40 delicious salad ingredients; salad bar "themes" will rotate daily and will include a delightful assortment of crisp vegetables, salads, greens and dressings to complement the customer's selection.
 -- Soup Bar -- Two delicious, piping-hot soup and chili selections will be available on a daily basis.
 -- Espresso Coffee Bar
 -- Yogurt Bar -- A self-service machine will feature two delicious non-fat yogurt selections.
 -- Seating Area -- A special seating area will be offered for customers to sit and relax or to enjoy a beverage, meal or snack.
 Expanded Produce Department -- Safeway has retained the successful, Orchard-Bin display/merchandising concept and will feature a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables.
 -- Fresh Juices -- An assortment of fresh-squeezed fruit juices will be available.
 Full-Service Fresh Seafood Counter -- Will offer more than 30 varieties of seafood and fish -- fresh and fresh-frozen. Knowledgeable personnel will be on hand to assist shoppers with selections and recipes, as well as serving suggestions.
 Imported and Micro-Brewed Beers -- Over 86 different varieties of imported, specialty and micro-brewed beers, along with an expanded selection of domestic beers, will be offered.
 Gourmet Bulk Whole Bean Coffees -- Shoppers will be captivated by the delicious aroma from Safeway's Gourmet Bulk Whole Bean Coffee section. This department will feature Mill Stone Gourmet Coffees exclusively, delivered fresh daily.
 This department will feature over 47 varieties of roasted and flavored gourmet coffees.
 Customer Service Counter -- Safeway will introduce a full-service, fully staffed Customer Service Counter to more efficiently serve customers. The new department is centrally located at the front of the store and will be able to handle: photo developing; check cashing; cigarette, battery and film sales; information; customer questions/inquiries; postage stamp sales; Tri Met ticket sales; and fax machine.
 Pharmacy -- Paul Bowers will manage Safeway's newest pharmacy; he will be joined by Jill Blount, staff pharmacist. Both are looking forward to serving area residents and surrounding communities. The full-service pharmacy will be open seven days a week:
 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday - Friday
 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday
 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday
 The pharmacy will feature quality generic drugs, health and beauty aids, senior citizen discounts, computerized patient profiles, TDD phone-in prescription service for hearing and/or speech impaired individuals, diabetic supplies, a free blood pressure machine and will accept most major third party plans.
 A separate scanner will operate at all times the pharmacy is open insure quick checkout for pharmaceutical purchases. Visa and MasterCard will gladly be accepted on all pharmacy purchases.
 Greeting Cards -- An expanded selection of greeting cards will be available for all occasions.
 Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) -- Part of the Exchange Network, will be centrally located for easy access and convenient banking while shopping.
 Bank of America -- A branch office will open shortly after the grand opening.
 Disabled shoppers and their needs have also been incorporated into the design of the Rose City Center Safeway MARKETPLACE. Special features for disabled shoppers include:
 1. Two motorized "scooters" for shoppers with mobility impairments
 2. Wide aisles to easy accommodate wheelchairs
 3. Entrance ramps and reserved handicapped parking spaces near the entrance of the store
 4. Public restrooms, with wheelchair access, will also be available as an added shopper's convenience.
 Safeway's longtime policy of recycling all cardboard material will continue; a 10-foot-high baling machine is used to hydraulically crush cardboard into 500-pound bales for recycling.
 And four shopping carts, each equipped with an infant carrier, will also be offered as a convenience to shoppers with small children or infants.
 Management Team -- the Safeway MARKETPLACE management team will be led by store manager, Art Galego, a 20-year veteran of the food industry. Galego began his grocery career in 1973 as a courtesy clerk or "bag boy" in Reedsport, Ore.
 His career has given him an extensive background in the grocery business and includes experience as a courtesy clerk, apprentice food clerk, journeyman food clerk, dairy clerk, night crew and head food clerk.
 In 1982, Galego earned his first assistant manager assignment and served in that capacity until receiving his promotion to store manager in January 1985.
 Prior to his current assignment, Galego managed numerous Safeway stores, including stores in Eugene and Gladstone, as well as his most- recent assignment, managing the Clackamas/Sunnyside Safeway MARKETPLACE since October 1989.
 Joining Galego on the management team is assistant store manager, Dave Cook.

 The Rose City Center Safeway MARKETPLACE is part of Safeway's Portland Division, with headquarters in Clackamas, Ore.
 Thomas C. Keller, senior vice president and division manager of Safeway's Portland Division, oversees the 102 retail stores in Oregon and S.W. Washington, as well as distribution center and trucking operations, which serve Safeway stores within the Portland Division.
 Wayne Fero is Safeway's retail operations manager and is responsible for store-level operations.
 Lyle Waterman is Safeway marketing operations manager and is responsible for all aspects of Safeway's retail merchandising program.
 Rod Benevides is Safeway's South Portland district manager, overseeing 17 Safeway stores in Portland, Gladstone, Milwaukie, Sandy, as well as Gresham and Boring.
