SAFEWAY EXECUTIVE ROBERT E. BRADFORDELECTED NATIONAL EASTER SEAL SOCIETY CHAIRMAN

 CHICAGO, Nov. 25 ~PRNewswire~ -- Safeway Inc. executive Robert E. Bradford was elected chairman of the National Easter Seal Society's board of directors at the society's national convention in Tampa, Fla. Bradford has served as a member of the national society's board since 1986, and chaired its Telethon (1988-1990) and Member Relations and Standards Review (1990-1991) committees. He also is an active volunteer with the Easter Seal Society of the Bay Area in Oakland, Calif.
 Bradford has been senior vice president of Safeway Inc., based in Oakland, since December 1983. His responsibilities include public relations; government affairs; communications; and consumer, community and media relations. Bradford has spearheaded Safeway Inc.'s efforts to raise funds that support Easter Seals' quality rehabilitation programs since 1986, when Safeway Inc. became a National Easter Seal Society corporate sponsor.
 He has more than 30 years of public affairs experience in both business and government. Prior to joining Safeway, he was a senior vice president with Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co. (A&P).
 He served four years as an executive vice president of Food Marketing Institute (FMI), the trade association representing the supermarket industry, and for a year was president and chief executive officer of the National Restaurant Association (NRA). Both are headquartered in Washington D.C.
 Bradford has spent most of his career in Washington. While in the public sector, he was administrative assistant to Senator Bill Brock of Tennessee. For 10 years, he was administrative assistant to Congressman Richard Poff of Virginia (Poff is now Justice Emeritus of the Virginia Supreme Court). In 1973-74, he was director of Congressional Relations for the Federal Cost of Living Council.
 Other positions held by Bradford include director of Government Relations for the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. and news director of Washington's WJLA-TV (Channel 7). After serving as a captain in the U.S. Army, he worked at several Virginia and Washington D.C. radio and TV stations, receiving 17 Associated Press awards for excellence in broadcast journalism.
 Bradford attended Augusta Military Academy and following undergraduate work at Washington and Lee University was a fellow at the Harvard University Institute of Politics.
 As an active volunteer leader, Bradford has served on the boards of Keep America Beautiful and Second Harvest. He is now on the board of Friends of the Arts and is on the Executive Committee of the California Retailers Association. He also is a member of the Advisory Committee to the Institute of Politics, Harvard University.
 Bradford and his wife Nancy reside in Danville, Calif. They have three children.
 The National Easter Seal Society is a community-based non-profit voluntary health organization.
