SAFEWAY EMPLOYEES SET EASTER SEAL RECORD
HOLLYWOOD, Calif., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- The employees of

Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) have set a new fundraising record for Easter Seals, donating $7,215,218 on the annual Easter Seal Telethon which ended today.
The $7.2 million Safeway figure is the largest donation by one company's employees in the 21 year history of the Easter Seal Telethon. The 20-hour Telethon originating from the StarSearch Theater in Hollywood collected a record $46,054,153.
Safeway and Safeway's employees began their support of Easter Seals a decade ago in Washington, D.C. Year by year, the Safeway commitment to Easter Seals has grown. Last year, Safeway's final check to Easter Seals was for $5.1 million.
Over the last 12 months, Safeway employees used a variety of creative fundraising techniques to collect money for Easter Seals. For instance, employees in a Fraser, Colo., store held a ski vacation raffle to raise money. These same employees auctioned off a side of beef en route to raising more than $10,000 for Easter Seals. Safeway employees at one store in Washington, D.C. held pool parties, dances and barbecues and raised $20,000. Tacoma, Wash., area employees put a gift wrap booth at a local mall and raised $17,800 during the holiday season. Safeway's 16-store Hawaii district raised more than $450,000 selling Huli Huli chicken, a local favorite, and root beer floats, and holding carnivals and auctions.
"We are very proud of our employees," said Safeway CEO Peter Magowan. "Our people have discovered that Easter Seals helps their neighbors, their friends, their customers, even their own families. They also have learned that 94 percent of all money Easter Seals raises stays in the local community to provide direct services to people with disabilities."
Safeway is a supermarket company operating stores in 20 states and the District of Columbia.
Easter Seals is a non-profit community-based health agency dedicated to the independence of people with disabilities. More than 1 million children and adults with disabilities receive direct services from Easter Seals every year.
