SAFEWAY ANNOUNCES WINNERS IN MILLION FREE IN '93 SCHOOL SWEEPSTAKES

LANHAM, Md., Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway Inc. (NYSE: SWY) announced the names of the winning schools in its Million Free in '93 School Sweepstakes sponsored by Safeway's Register Tapes For Education program. The sweepstakes was open to all of the approximately 2,000 schools in the Washington, Baltimore and Virginia areas currently enrolled in Register Tapes For Education.
The Million Free in '93 School Sweepstakes gave three schools (one in Maryland, one in Washington and one in Virginia) a chance to win a bonus tape credit of $1 million each.
"An opportunity beyond compare," said Bill McDown, senior vice president and manager of Safeway's Eastern Division. A total of $1 million worth of receipt tape credit could earn local schools any of the following: (9) IBM PS/2 Model 25 computers including color monitors, (30) IBM Personal Printers, (21) RCA 20-inch Color Televisions, (24) RCA Video Cassette Recorders, (12) Professional Overhead Projectors, (55) Scientific Explorer Microscopes, (10) Marching Trombones or (55) Classroom Band Sets.
Every $20 purchase earned Safeway customers an entry blank and the chance to help the school of their choice. As quickly as parents, teachers and friends could turn in the entry blanks to schools for validation, schools were busy forwarding over 2 million validated entries to Register Tapes For Education Headquarters for the sweepstakes drawing. "It couldn't have been easier," McDown said.
The winners were drawn today by McDown and will be honored at a luncheon hosted by McDown at Safeway's Eastern Division headquarters on Feb. 24.
