SAFEWAY ANNOUNCES NAMES OF WINNING SCHOOLS IN TAPE COLLECTION CENTER DISPLAY CONTEST

LANHAM, Md., Jan. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway Inc. announced the names of the winning schools in its $900,000 Tape Collection Center Display Contest sponsored by Safeway's Register Tapes for Education program. The contest was open to all of the approximately 2,000 schools in the Washington, Baltimore and Virginia areas currently enrolled in Register Tapes for Education.
The Tape Collection Center Display Contest gave nine schools (three in Maryland, three in Washington, three in Virginia) a chance to win a bonus tape credit of $100,000 each.
"How? -- it was easy," said Bill McDown, senior vice president and division manager of Safeway's Eastern Division. "Schools had to build and decorate a receipt tape collection center -- take a picture of the display and send it to our division offices for judging." Entries were judged on originality, creativity and student involvement.
"We believe," said McDown, "the contest provided a level playing field for all schools and was an excellent opportunity for schools to generate additional tape dollars and enthusiasm."
Safeway congratulates the following schools on their prize- winning entries:
 Maryland
-- Capt. James C. Daly Elementary, Germantown
-- Valley View Elementary, Oxon Hill
 -- Melwood Elementary, Upper Marlboro
 Virginia
 -- Fairview Elementary, Fairfax Station
 -- Stone-Robinson Elementary, Charlottesville
 -- Garland Quarles Elementary, Winchester
