 SAFEWAY ANNOUNCES 'PHARMACY EXPRESS'
 PRESCRIPTION HOME DELIVERY SERVICE
FREMONT, Calif., March 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway (NYSE: SWY) today expands the convenient "Safeway Express" home delivery service to include "Pharmacy Express." Safeway is the first Northern California retailer to offer the convenience of prescription delivery service. Shoppers will now be able to place their prescription orders by telephone or fax machine and receive same-day or next-day delivery. A delivery fee of only $4.95 will be charged for all deliveries. Customers can save 50 cents when they fax their orders.
"We look for Safeway Pharmacy Express to help ease the burden and time constraints of taking care of an ill loved one," said George D.
Unti, senior vice president and division manager. "Pharmacy Express enhances our service and directly addresses the needs of today's customers."
The program will bring years of experience in grocery home delivery and decades of service and caring from the trusted Safeway neighborhood pharmacist right to the customer's door during two delivery periods.
Customers and physicians will be able to place their order anytime -- 24 hours a day -- simply by calling Safeway Pharmacy Express, 800-544-4552. Home deliveries will be available each weekday, Monday through Friday, during two time frames: afternoon, 1 to 4:30 p.m.; and early evening, 6:30 to 9 p.m. Orders must be placed at least four hours before delivery.
Customers will pay the same prices for prescriptions and health care items that they would pay if they shopped at the store themselves. Safeway's Pharmacy Express will also accept payment through customer insurance programs and will provide generic drugs upon request.
Once an order is placed through the toll-free number, it is then sent via fax to the store nearest the customer's zip code for processing. At the store, a professional Safeway pharmacist carefully fills the order. The orders are then securely bagged and delivered to the customer.
Pharmacy Express will service the nine counties of the Bay Area, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Monterey, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz and Sonoma counties.
Shoppers Express, based in Bethesda, Md., has successfully worked with Safeway as well as other leading supermarket chains in the shop- by-phone industry.
Safeway is the third largest grocery chain in the United States, operating 235 stores in Northern California.
