 SAFEWAY, PEPSI, FRITO-LAY JOIN FORCES
 FOR 'TAPES FOR EDUCATION' PROGRAM
LANHAM, Md., Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Safeway, Inc. (NYSE: SWY), announced that it has joined forces with Pepsi and Frito-Lay to offer area schools the opportunity to exchange Safeway receipts not only for computers but also for audio-visual equipment, band equipment, sports equipment as well as equipment for early-learning centers through its "Tapes for Education" program. Additionally, schools have the opportunity to place a special order for any equipment not offered in the catalog.
Registration packets have already been mailed to area schools and to PTA presidents. Schools don't have to wait to be officially registered to start collecting receipts. Beginning Sept. 9, Safeway receipts will again become collectors items.
"We believe we have designed a program to specifically address the budget restraints under which schools must operate today. The expanded selection of equipment available through our program will enable science, band and athletic programs to continue to be offered to students," said Bill McDown, senior vice president of Safeway's Eastern Division.
"We've helped area schools in many ways over the years and to date have given schools computers and software valued in excess of $5 million."
Any school with a kindergarten or any of the grades one through 12 is eligible to participate.
"There's not a moment to waste," said McDown. "Schools should enroll now to receive their early enrollment bonus and begin immediately to collect tapes to take advantage of Safeway's offer to double the value of tapes deposited before Oct. 31."
Safeway has made it easy for everyone to help schools this year. Collection envelopes have been mailed to members of the Savings Club to encourage everyone to save tapes. Individuals who don't have a direct school affiliation can save their receipt tapes and use the envelope to donate them to a general school fund to be distributed to all participating schools at the close of the program. "Working together we can enhance existing instructional programs for all students," said McDown.
