SAAB ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY PROTOTYPE TO MAKE NORTHEAST DEBUT
AT GREATER NEW YORK INTERNATIONAL AUTOMOBILE SHOW
Features Multi-Fuel Engine And CFC-Free AC
NEW YORK, April 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Saab Cars USA, Inc. will debut an environmentally friendly Saab 9000 prototype at the Greater New York International Automobile Show at Jacob Javits Convention Center, which is powered by an alternative, multi-fuel engine that adapts itself to run on any ratio of gasoline, methanol, or ethanol to lower exhaust emissions. This is the first time that such a Saab prototype has been displayed in the Northeast.
Saab's advanced engineering vehicle also includes the Swedish automaker's recently developed freon-free air conditioning system, which utilizes an ozone-friendly refrigerant called HFC-134a that is void of chlorinated fluorocarbons (CFC's). Such substances, more commonly known as freons, are considered harmful to the earth's precariously thin ozone layer.
 Saab's Alternative, Multi-Fuel Engine
The Saab alternative, multi-fuel engine is the result of Saab Automobile AB's further development with its technically advanced ignition and fuel injection systems, and the automaker's ongoing research attests to Saab's commitment to the environment, since alcohol-based fuels such as methanol and ethanol are considered good alternatives to gasoline.
Saab's prototype multi-fuel engine incorporates a small, 6-liter blending tank to supplement the standard fuel tank system. (Patent applications have already been filed for this Saab innovation.) The blending tank guarantees that any combination of gasoline, methanol, or ethanol will mix in a slow, carefully controlled manner to enable the fuel injection system of the Saab engine to adapt itself in accordance with the varying chemical properties of each fuel type. This adaptive fuel injection function is controlled by the standard oxygen sensor located in the exhaust system, which normally maintains the proper air/fuel ratio for the Saab 9000 exhaust emission control system. The car's fuel injection system has been recalibrated to provide a wider control range than the standard specification, with control electronics and software logic developed by Saab.
 Saab's CFC-Free Air Conditioning
Environmental experts have found that the refrigerant utilized in automotive air conditioners contain cholorinated flourocarbons, or CFC's, that are known to have a detrimental effect on the earth's deteriorating ozone layer. In reaction to the world-recognized detriments of CFC's, or freons, Saab will soon be phasing out its use of freons (R-12) and changing over to a refrigerant void of chlorinated fluorocarbons, well ahead of legislation which will require phase-out.
Saab is a pioneer among world car manufacturers in the development work conducted on HFC-134a. In fact, several of the components developed by Saab for its ozone-friendly air conditioning system -- adapters and connections -- could serve as a basis for the standardization work now being pursued by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE).
Saab cars benefitting from the HFC-134a refrigerant will include a label in the car's engine compartment, which Saab has designed and proposed as the world standard for all air conditioning systems in which the new refrigerant is used.
Even prior to these environmentally conscious Saab innovations, the Saab 9000 was named the most "Environmentally Friendly" car in its price-class by the physicians, pharmacists, and doctors who read Germany's largest medical journal, Status.
