SAAB 9000 TRIONIC ENGINE MANAGEMENT NAMED '94 TECHNOLOGY OF THE YEAR BY AUTOMOBILE MAGAZINE

NORCROSS, Ga., Dec. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- The Innovative Saab Trionic engine management system has been named '94 Technology of the Year by Automobile magazine.
Saab Trionic engine management is standard equipment on all 1994 Saab 9000 models.
Saab's Trionic engine management system automatically and instantly adjusts fuel injection, ignition and, in turbocharged 9000 models, turbo boost pressure. The special "trick" within Trionic is the unique utilization of the simple spark plug, which performs double-duty by also serving as a combustion sensor. Ionization voltage is measured across the plug gap to determine combustion efficiency, and Saab Trionic then adjusts engine systems for improved performance and economy, and reduced exhaust emissions.
According to Automobile editors, the 32-bit microprocessor that controls the Saab Trionic system "is the most powerful computer ever placed in a production car" -- more powerful than the computers used in the Apollo space capsule during its voyage to the moon.
For its patented design and application, Saab Trionic was also recently selected as a finalist in the automotive category of the prestigious 1993 Discover Magazine Awards for Technical Innovation. In addition, Saab Trionic was acclaimed for "technical innovation" by the Motoring Journalists' Club of Denmark.
Automobile magazine's Technology of the Year Award is showcased in the publication's January 1994 issue. This special "Automobile of the Year" edition presents awards in five categories -- two of which feature Saab as the winner. In addition to the Innovative Saab 9000's Trionic engine management system '94 Technology of the Year award, the all-new Saab 900 has been named '94 Design of the Year by Automobile magazine.
