SAAB 2000 REGIONAL JETPROP COMPLETES MAIDEN FLIGHT
 LINKOPING, Sweden, March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- The Saab 2000

regional jetprop, the world's fastest and quietest turboprop regional airliner, successfully completed its first flight today. Aircraft 001 took off on its maiden flight at 3:22 p.m. (Sweden time).
The first flight of the Saab 2000 lasted for 1 hour, 30 minutes and was piloted by Eric Sjoberg, chief test pilot, and Lennart Nordh, project test pilot.
Sjoberg said, after completing the historic first flight, "The aircraft handled exactly as we expected. All of our pre-programmed test points were successfully completed. We are extremely happy."
During the first flight, the Saab 2000 reached an altitude of 15,000 feet and a speed 160 knots. This first test aircraft is very close to production configuration and utilized the Collins ProLine 4 avionics suite as standard equipment.
With the completion of the first flight, the Saab 2000 program has now entered a flight test phase that will end with type certification in the spring of next year. Delivery of the first production aircraft will take place in September 1993 to the launch customer, Crossair of Switzerland.
According to the Saab 2000 program director, Saab Aircraft Vice President Johan Oster, "We will flight test three aircraft through mid-1993 and accumulate nearly 1,200 flight hours on the prototype aircraft. We are very pleased to begin our flight testing as planned and see the results of our efforts."
The flight test program for the Saab 2000 will be based at Skavsta Airport near Nykoping, Sweden. New flight test facilites were built at the airport which is about 100 kilometers north of Linkoping.
Christer Skogsborg, president of Saab Aircraft AB, said, "This is an important milestone for Saab Aircraft. We are confident the entire flight test program will be as successful as this first flight. We sincerely believe we have a real winner in the Saab 2000, already chosen by several of the world's major regional airlines."
The Saab 2000 is designed for a cruise speed of 370 knots with a fully loaded range well in excess of 1,000 nautical miles. At 76 dBA, the aircraft will be the quietest in-cabin regional airliner on the world market. The 2000 will seat 50 to 58 passengers in complete comfort.
The production Saab 2000 aircraft will be capable of climbing to 20,000 feet in 10 minutes and cruise at high speeds powered by two Allison GMA 2100 engines. The aircraft will utilize a maximum take- off power of 4152 shaft horsepower per engine. The engine will be certified later this year at more than 4500 shaft horsepower.
Saab Aircraft has received 194 commitments for the Saab 2000, including 46 firm orders. The success of the Saab 2000 is built on the highly successful 30 to 35 seat Saab 340 regional airliner that has been in revenue service for nearly eight years. Saab has sold 366 of the 340 series aircraft, and 290 are in service with 32 operators on five continents.
The new Saab 2000 is produced by Saab Aircraft AB, a subsidiary of Saab-Scania AB based in Linkoping.
