 S.S. UNITED STATES LEAVES PORT AFTER 23 YEARS;
 GIANT LINER TO BE REFITTED FOR OCEAN SERVICE
 NEW YORK, June 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The S.S. United States, purchased by Marmara Marine, Inc., on April 27, 1992, is scheduled to leave Newport News, Va., on June 4, for Istanbul, Turkey, it was announced today, where the first steps will be taken to convert her to her former elegance as a premier luxury liner.
 The vessel, formerly the pride of the U.S. merchant fleet and the fastest ship on the seas, will be towed by one of the world's largest tugboats, the Smit Rotterdam to its destination.
 Fred Mayer, chief executive officer of Marmara Marine, stated, "When we purchased the ship we indicated it would depart from Newport News by June 15. We are on target and intend to proceed as quickly as possible to restore her to her original stature, making her worthy of her name."
 Mayer pointed out that "the towing will take approximately 35 days and the liner will then enter her temporary home base at the Turkter Shipyards, owned by Kahraman Sadikoglu, for the initial preparation stages of conversion."
 Marmara Marine is vigorously pursuing the fulfillment of the financial and operational issues that attend the refurbishing process.
