Byline: CHRIS HUGHES

ELITE armed officers will be on terror alert to protect European and US golfers at the Ryder Cup in France.

Surface-to-air missiles will also be used to guard Le Golf National course 20 miles from Paris.

A French security source said: "Teams will be on standby a couple of minutes away.

"Everybody will be protected on the ground by armed police. Mobile surface-to-air missiles will be deployed in case of attacks from the air."

Just six miles from Le Golf National is the HQ of the GIGN, the tactical unit of France's gendarmerie who specialise in counter-terrorism.

And RAID, the elite tactical unit of the French National Police, are based 10 miles away.

Edward Kitson, Ryder Cup match director, said: "We're working closely with French government agencies."

The skies above Le Golf National will be closed to regular air traffic. Spectators must use shuttle buses to reach the event, which takes place from September 28 to 30.
