Ryan Companies US, Inc. Accepts the 1999 National Design-Build Institute of America Award.

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Ryan Companies US, Inc., is pleased to announce that it has been awarded the 1999 National Design-Build Institute of America Award for Best Public Project Over $15 Million, for its construction of the Minnesota Department of Revenue building. A panel of experts from across the country judged the submitted projects and chose one top award winner for each of the nine categories. The 1999 National Design-Build Institute of America Award for Best Public Project Over $15 Million, was presented to Robert Goodpaster, Vice President of Ryan Companies, at the Design-Build Institute of America Awards Banquet on October 14, 1999 in Dallas, Texas. These awards are presented annually and represent the highest achievement in design-build.

The Minnesota Department of Revenue building project, the State of Minnesota's first design-build project, was selected for the award because Ryan successfully achieved the State of Minnesota's project goals. The criteria for the award was based on the design-build process, performance, architecture, risk management and problem solving. Special emphasis was placed on the design team's use of innovation to add value. "Innovation" included the use of new systems, methods and processes that benefited cost, efficiency/speed, safety and quality. "The inherent flexibility of the design-build process allowed Ryan to get the project superstructure and other critical components underway prior to finalizing the building's exterior image," said Goodpaster, "This provided adequate time for decisions to be made by the numerous stakeholders while keeping the project on schedule."

The State of Minnesota was seeking a fast track, design-build project to provide new space to meet Department of Revenue and Capitol Area Architectural Board requirements. Ryan Companies completed the $77,443,000 design-build project ahead of the ambitious 16-month schedule and the building was fully occupied 2 weeks earlier than the deadline. In applying the design-build process, Ryan guaranteed the design, schedule and price of the project from start to finish. "Though the State had never utilized design-build, it realized it could not meet it's schedule with the traditional "plan and spec" method of construction," said Patrick Ryan, President, Ryan Companies US, Inc.

Located at 600 North Robert Street in St. Paul, Minn., the Minnesota Department of Revenue building, serves as a gateway between the Minnesota State Capitol and downtown St. Paul. Completed in September 1998, the Department of Revenue project is a 385,000 square foot building, which is divided into two basic areas -- a larger four-story secure office area and a two-story public service and conference area. The building's exterior is a highly detailed architectural precast system with deepest reveals, sills, cornices and various textures all working together to give depth and quality to the building exterior.

Ryan partnered with Hammel Green and Abrahamson, Inc. (HGA) to provide the design services. HGA had experience working with the State of Minnesota including the Minnesota History Center is St. Paul and had done previous master planning on the capitol complex.
