Ryan's an SAS TV star.

A GATESHEAD martial arts expert triumphed in a TV endurance test.

Ryan Roddy, 25, came out top on Channel 4's SAS survival programme which hit screens this month.

The show gave 30 contestants an eight-day glimpse into the selection process of one of the world's most elite special forces.

The course was run by former members and included sections on endurance, fear and interrogation.

Above all Ryan credits his disciplined mentality for helping him.

The MMA fighter said: "I treated it like a fight. I looked at the things I'm good at and the things I'm not. I talked to my friends in the military to get an idea of what to expect and did a lot of reading."

"It's 90% mentality. The whole idea is to get out of your own way. You're holding yourself back."
