Rx: exercise.

At a recent meeting of the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, Chairman Arnold Schwarzenegger and his colleagues proposed a plan to mail exercise prescription blanks to physicians for them to fill out for their patients.

Council members and divergent views might have spent the day debating exactly what information would go on the prescription blanks, but not with this heavyweight chairing the meeting. He soon sought a compromise in the interest of getting the forms printed and mailed without delay.

The final prescription forms will be longer than the truncated and adapted version we've printed below. The following additional information will be printed on the back of the prescription:

"Exercise is effective for the prevention and treatment of a wide variety of medical conditions. Among these are:
Hypertension Depression
Vascular Disease Stroke
High Cholesterol Obesity
Osteoporosis Back Pain
Heart Disease Diabetes
Pulmonary Disease."

The latest victory for the fitness crowd is a recent study showing that exercise might also help prevent colon cancer--a big killer. If this is true, then this is all the more reason why doctors should prescribe exercise for their patients.
