Rula relief at attack confession.

Byline: Simon Boyle

ACTRESS Rula Lenska has told friends of her relief after ex-husband Dennis Waterman admitted beating her.

The 64-year-old former Coronation Street star said: "Finally, the truth is out".

She told a pal yesterday: "I've spent years being branded a liar because some people thought I'd made it up. I finally feel vindicated."

Waterman admitted for the first time this week he had "lashed out" before they split in 1998 after denying her claims for several years.

The 64-year-old New Tricks actor told chat host Piers Morgan: "The problem with strong, intelligent women is that they can argue well."

He appeared to blame some victims of domestic violence, saying: "It's not difficult for a woman to make a man hit her."

Confessing he may have drunk too much, he added: "I must have hit her one time because she had a black eye. I felt utterly ashamed."

Rula's agent Paul Pearson said: "She's pleased Dennis has finally admitted what he did, but at the same time it's all very upsetting."

Domestic violence campaigners condemned Waterman's words.

Refuge Chief executive Sandra Horley said: "I am appalled by his comments, which trivialise the abuse he inflicted on Rula.

"No one can make their partner hit them.

"He alone is responsible."
