Rugby Union: PORTUGAL DATE FOR BATES.

Byline: KEVIN BOYD

NEW Borders coach Steve Bates will kick-off his first Euro campaign with the pro outfit against the champions of Portugal.

The Netherdale side will travel to Portugal to face AA Coimbra in the European Challenge Cup on October 22, 23 or 24 with the return leg a week later.

Bates, who replaced Tony Gilbert as coach, previously took Newcastle Falcons to two European Challenge Cup semi-finals.

Meanwhile, George Breckenridge has quit the coaching staff at Ayr after being leapfrogged by his assistant.

Former Scotland A playmaker Breckenridge, who guided the club to the Premiership top flight, walked out of Millbrae when Craig Redpath was given the reins for next season.

Ayr officials decided they wanted ex-Melrose hero Redpath as their No1, with Breckenridge demoted to become backs coach.

And what infuriated him was the fact that he was told of the swap plan by e-mail. Breckenridge said: "I feel that I now have to leave on my own terms.

"I wish the club every success in the future and hope that Craig and the team continue to thrive at that level."

Vice president Billy McHarg defended the decision to hoist Redpath up the pecking order, saying: "The club management felt that at this point Craig had more to offer as head coach."
