Rugby Union: Trophy heartbreak; Morpeth ...........30 Birkenhead ........27.

THERE was heartbreak for Park as they were edged out of the Powergen National Trophy deep into injury time. The Wirral side hit back from a 14-27 deficit to level matters out.

Extra time looked a certainty when Matt Jinks put over a 35m drop goal with the very last kick.

Steve Crampton, Steve Dodd and Matt Pennington were on form but slackness in defence cost Park dear.

Jinks put over an early penalty before forward pressure culminated in a Dodd touchdown for Park with Crampton converting. Morpeth seized the initiative with two tries by Paul Jackson, both goaled by Jinks, before Steve Clarke crossed for the visitors, with Crampton adding the extras.

A Jinks penalty stretched the home lead but Crampton replied for Park and then sub Nick Taylor went in following a melee near the home line.

With time running out Park's Paul Brennand had a try disallowed but then Dodd sneaked in to level. The conversion was missed before Jinks put the seal on a terrific kicking display with the last-ditch winner
