Rugby Union: Birkenhead's sad exit.

BIRKENHEAD School suffered an 18-13 defeat in the northern semi-final of the Under- 18 Daily Mail Cup.

The Wirral side took an early lead at St Peter's,York, when flanker David Bulley took full advantage of good early possession to sprint over from 10 metres.

Their opponents came back strongly and scored almost immediately from a penalty. They improved their position with an unconverted try, and a further penalty provided them with a precious 11- 5 half time lead.

The highly regarded Under-18 England trial list and Cheshire County player Andy Roberts is not noted for try scoring, but the big lock forward chose a good time to pick up six metres out and drive over to put his team back in the game at 11-10.

Shortly afterwards, James Mulchrone held his nerve to land a penalty that briefly gave the lead back to Birkenhead at 13- 11. But the St Peter's fly half chipped through and followed up to score and the extra points were added.

The Wirral boys exerted some pressure in the final quarter of the match, but could not add further scores.
