Rugby League: STEVE TURNS RED AGAIN.

ENGLAND stand-off Steve Blakeley has made a surprise return to Salford after a brief switch to Warrington.

The 27-year-old ended a seven-year stint with the Reds at the end of last season after a contract dispute. But he found it difficult to win a place in the Warrington side.

He was outshone by Lee Briers and made only four starts in 12 matches this season.

Blakeley admitted last night he was delighted to be back at Salford.

He said: "I've had only one full 80 minutes since signing for Warrington and it's been frustrating sitting on the bench.

"I didn't want to be a permanent sub at this stage in my career."

Salford coach John Harvey turned to Blakeley after injuries left him desperately short of playmakers for the 42-16 defeat at Leeds on Tuesday night.

Graham Holroyd, the former Leeds and Halifax stand-off who was signed to replace Blakeley at Salford, has yet to figure in a competitive match. He dislocated his shoulder in a pre-season friendly.

David Tarry, the Salford chief executive, said: "We didn't want Steve to go in the first place and his return is a massive boost. We've struggled with injuries at half-back but Graham Holroyd will definitely be staying."

FORMER Wales forward Doug Phillips, who went on the 1946 and 1950 Great Britain tours to Australia and played for Oldham and Belle Vue Rangers, has died in Neath. He was 80.
