Rugby League: Toony axe blow; Munster v Borders.

BORDERS coach Steve Bates has decided to axe Gregor Townsend for the Magners League clash with European champions Munster.

The sides go head to head at Thomond Park tonight with Bates backing his new signing Steve Jones to add a midfield spark in the wake of the Reivers' opening-day home defeat by Connacht last week.

Townsend, Scotland's most-capped player, was unable to halt the slide at Netherdale - and now former rugby league ace Jones has been handed the chance to earn a prolonged spell in the No.10 jersey after coming on as a replacement in the 29-15 defeat.

Bates will also give a debut to Melrose winger Mark Robertson who bagged last season's Try of the Year Award for his stunning effort in the first ever club international between Scotland and Ireland in Dublin.
