Sew

1 Draw diagonal line on wrong side of white solid 3 7/8" square. Referring to Diagram I-A, place marked square on red print 3 7/8" square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" seam on each side of marked line; cut apart on marked line. Open and press to make 2 pieced squares. Make 60.

Make 120 pieced squares using white solid and dark red mottle 3 7/8" squares (Diagram I-B).

2 Sew together 2 white, 1 red print, and 1 dark red mottle 4 1/4" quarter-square triangles to make hourglass unit (Diagram II). Make 30. You'll have 2 red print and 2 dark red mottle triangles left over.

3 Referring to Diagram III-A and watching placement and orientation throughout, sew 3 rows using 5 pieced squares, 2 white 3 1/2" squares, hourglass unit, and 1 red vine print 3 1/2" square. Sew rows together to make large pieced unit. Add white/red pieced square and 2 white 9 1/2" strips to complete half-block A. Make 15.

In same manner, but substituting red/black dot 3 1/2" square for red vine print square, make half-block B (Diagram III-B). Make 15. Referring to Diagram IV, sew together 1 each half-blocks A and B to make Shadow Block. Make 15.

4 Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps. Watch orientation of blocks throughout. Sew 3 rows of 5 blocks each. Stitch rows together. Add white 64" strips to top and bottom; trim even with sides.

5 Sew dark red mottle 82" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Stitch dark red mottle 72" strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides.

6 Layer, baste, and quilt. Jean machine quilted an allover pattern of swirls and leaves. Bind with dark red mottle.
