Royal committee calls for preserving status quo in Jerusalem.
Amman, Aug. 18 (Petra) -- The Royal Committee for Jerusalem Affairs has called on international organizations, the United Nations (UN) and peace sponsors to pressure Israel into not altering the status quo in Jerusalem if they want to preserve world and regional peace and security. The committee Sunday said in a statement that what is happening in the al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif is illegal and detrimental to the image of the United Nations, and risks plunging the region into a state of instability that legitimizes Israel's use of force and lack of respect for the law, human dignity and freedom of belief, which are guaranteed by the international laws. The royal committee criticized the world's silence, especially the U.S., over the Israeli demolition of houses and Arab neighborhoods and the confiscation and leveling of thousands of dunums of Palestinian land, expulsion of the population, and violations against Muslim and Christian sanctities in Jerusalem. The statement highlighted the United Nations General Assembly's resolutions that inveigh against the Israeli settlement expansion and the building of the racist wall of separation. It pointed out that the international legitimacy underscores the importance of preserving the status quo in occupied Jerusalem. The statement demanded Israel to return to the status quo prior to the year 2000 and abide by the UN's decision that emphasizes that the Awqaf and Islamic Affairs Department in Jerusalem has the sole authority over the al-Aqsa Mosque/al-Haram al-Sharif. //Petra// AK 18/08/2019 19:25:32
