THIS year marks Birmingham Royal Ballet's 25th birthday - but it's the city's residents that are getting the pesents.

Free tickets are being handed out by the company as a thank you to the city for taking it in a quarter of a century ago.

The online giveaway also marks World Ballet Day on Thursday, October 1. All Birmingham residents with a postcode beginning B are invited to visit www.brb.org.uk/thankyou from 9am, where at least 250 tickets will be available to the first applicants.

The tickets will be to see BRB perform Variations at Birmingham Hippodrome on October 8, 9 and 10.

One of the triple bill of short works is George Balanchine's Theme and Variations, the very first ballet perfromed by BRB after its relocation to the city from London in 1990.

Since then, it has presented 139 different ballets at the Hippodrome - and got through 62,500 pairs of pointe shoes.
