Route to Expo 2020.

Dubai - A 14.5 km extension Dubai Metro's red line has been confirmed by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), following approval by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai.

The Route 2020, as the extension has been named, will branch out of the red line from Nakheel Harbour and Tower station, snaking through several densely populated localities and industrial zones on its was to the Expo 2020 site.

The route is expected to serve around 240,000 people initially, serving the areas like Discovery Gardens, Gardens, Dubai Investment Park, Furjan and Jumeirah Golf Estates.

Of the 14.5 km, 10.5 km will be elevated, while four kilometres will be underground, with a major section of the route running along Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.

Dotted by seven stations, five of them elevated and two underground, the Route is also expected to connect with Etihad Rail which will pass through the Al Maktoum International Airport when it is scheduled to be ready by 2018.
