Rounded accents for covered entry.

Rounded accents for covered entry

Curved details, formed by custom-milled redwood dowels and cut beam ends, enrich and disguise this frametwork of standard-dimension lumber. The frame extends from one end of a hillside house, creating a landing that draws guests toward the second-floor entry.

Oakland landscape architect Mathew W. Henning had the oversize dowels milled from select heart 2-by-2s and 4-by-4s. A flat band left on each dowel prevents rolling while cutting or nailing. Three tiers of larger dowels add horizontal accents to the frame of the landing's flat roof; underneath, smaller dowels run through 2-by-10 beams. The smaller dowels also mask the front faces of 4-by-4 posts and add details to planter boxes.
