Rough it up: CSPI's new fiber scoreboard.

Did you know that:

* A Nature Valley Granola Bar has less fiber than a Snickers bar?

* A serving of Pritikin Navy Bean Soup has twice as much fiber as a serving of Kellogg's All Bran cereal?

* Tortilia chips have more than three times as much fiber as potato chips?

* The highest-fiber vegetable is a baked potato with skin?

You'll find more surprises like these in "Rough it Up: CSPI'S Fiber Scoreboard"-the most comprehensive listing available of fiber in brand-name and generic foods.

It's designed to help you follow the National Cancer Institute's recommendation to double or triple your fiber intake, from 10 grams a day to 20 or 30.

"Rough it Up" lists total fiber, because soluble and insoluble fiber have not been measured separately in most foods. However, foods that have been analyzed and that contain a significant amount of soluble fiber (at least 1 gram per serving) are marked with an asterisk (*).

Soluble fiber-such as that found in beans-may help control diabetes and lower blood cholesterol.

Insoluble fiber-such as that found in wheat bran-seems to help prevent problems with the digestive system, including constipation, diverticulosis, and possibly colon cancer.

"Rough It Up" also lists fat content, to help you avoid high-fiber foods that are also loaded with fat. These foods increase your risk of obesity, heart disease, and cancer. Try to eat more foods that contain at least 2 grams of fiber. And, of course, the lower the fat content, the better.

Also, always check serving sizes, and adjust our fiber and fat numbers to the portion you eat.
