Rooftop park nears opening in Manhattan.

A 1 million-square foot rooftop in Manhattan, a rare entity in itself, will soon stand among an even rarer breed. This barren concrete expanse is nearing the completion of its information into one of Manhattan's larger parks, with lush landscaping and an array of indoor and outdoor recreational and cultural facilities.

Tishman Construction Corporation of New York is managing the final stages of construction of Riverbank State Park, a 28-acre park that will cover that North River Water Pollution Control Facility on the Hudson River between West 138th adn 145th Streets in Manhattan. Under development by the State of New York, the $100-milion-plus, man-made park may well become the focus of leisure time for neighborhood residents when it opens this Spring. The project is currently progressing on time and under budget.

The New York State Office of General Services (OGS) is the government's arm responsible for the design and construction of the project. Working with the design firm of Richard Dattner Architect P.C., OGS chose Tishman to manage this complex, one-of-a-kind project.

The phased project entails the simultaneous construction of five major buildings and several minor structures, including: a 40,000-square-foot gymnasium with an official-size basketball court, locker rooms, security headquarters and administrative offices; a 57,000-square-foot recreational building housing an Olympic-size swimming pool, locker rooms, equipment rooms, administrative offices and an adjacent outdoor pool and wading pool; a 34,000-square-foot skating rink sheltered by an arched roof with dasher boards and Plexiglas windscreens; a 30,000-square-foot cultural building housing a full-size auditorium and administrative offices; a facilities building with equipment rooms and a green-house and a comfort station, two car-and pedestrian-access bridges, and two elevator stair towers, one of which will connect a lower-level amphitheater with the rooftop park. Tishman's team is also directing the installation of all utilities to the site. A ful-service restaurant and a carousel were constructed on the site prior to Tishman's involvement.
