Ronald L. Weiss.

Ronald L. Weiss, MD, MBA, FASCP, received the 2007 ASCP Ward Burdick Award for Distinguished Service to clinical pathology. The award recognizes an ASCP member who has made a significant contribution to pathology through sustained service to the profession and ASCP. Weiss is professor of pathology at the University of Utah School of Medicine and president/chief operating officer of the University's ARUP Laboratories. He is also staff hemato-pathologist with service responsibilities in the Hematologic Flow Cytometry Laboratory at ARUP and on the Hematopathology Consultation Service. Weiss is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, with subspecialty certification in hematology and medical microbiology. His research interests are in laboratory management and administration, including the role of the laboratory in protecting patient safety. Weiss received his MD from the Creighton University School of Medicine. He trained in anatomic and clinical pathology at the University of Utah, and then completed a fellowship in medical microbiology there before joining the faculty in the department of pathology in 1985. He serves on the board of the American Clinical Laboratory Association, the Economic Affairs Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP), and is a member of the board of trustees and current president-elect of the American Pathology Foundation.
