Romanian troops fighting Afghan freedom war: Basescu.

KABUL (PAN): The Romanian president decorated the 21st Manoeuvre Battalions flag with the Military Virtue for Cavaliers war Medal, as a token of appreciation and recognition of the units service in Afghanistan.

Traian Basescu gave away the awards at a ceremony held at Forward Operating Base Lagman in Qalat district of Zabul province, the International Security Assistance Force said on Monday.

The president also awarded the Military Virtue for Commander war Medal to Lieutenant Colonel Florin Stan,the 21st Manoeuvre Battalions Commander,and to Major Gregory Cannata,the B-1-4 Company Commander, for the high level of professionalism displayed during joint multinational missions in Afghanistan.

President Basescu said: "We are fighting here a war for the freedom of the Afghan people,a war of the civilized world against terrorism, a war that will protect our freedom and security for our homeland as well.

On the occasion, Romanian Minister of National Defence Mihai Stanisoara awarded the Romanian Ministry of Defence Medal of Honour to three officers. Seven soldiers received the Romanian General Staffs Emblem of Honour from Admiral Gheorghe Marin,the chief of Romanian General Staff.

The Romanian delegation included Major General Gheorghe Savu, the chief of the Military Intelligence Directorate,Brigadier General Valeriu Nicut, the General Staff Deputy Commander for Operations, Brigadier General Visarion Neagoe, the Commander of the Joint Operational Headquarters, officers and officials from the Ministry of National Defence and General Staff.

The 2nd Afghan National Army Brigade Commander, Major General Jahmaluddin Gamalalee,Zabuls police chief Brigadier General Rahman Abdul Sarjang,Zabuls National Directorate of Security head Nazar Ali Wahidi and other local officials were also in attendance.
