RESTON, Va., Nov. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Rolls-Royce will supply RB211-535E4B engines for 12 Boeing 757s to American Airlines, which has also reserved purchase rights on a further 38 of the twin-engined airliners.

This was announced yesterday by Chairman and CEO of the Dallas-based airline, Robert Crandall, as part of a large order for a range of Boeing aircraft.

Deliveries of the firm 757s are due to be completed during 1998 and 1999, and the new deal takes the total of Rolls-Royce powered 757s ordered by American Airlines past the 100 mark. American first ordered the 535-powered aircraft in 1988 and today operates a total of 90 Boeing 757s.

Eighty percent of airline customers buying Boeing 757s have selected Rolls-Royce engines to power the aircraft.

Crandall announced at yesterday's press conference at Dallas-Ft. Worth Airport that the airline will also acquire 12 firm with purchase rights on a further 38 Boeing 777 aircraft, Boeing's latest widebody twinjet, for which Rolls-Royce's, Trent 800 is a prime candidate.

This engine is rated at 92,000 pounds, with developments planned to 98,000-pound thrust.
