Rogue scrap cars warning.

A NORTH west Euro MP has warned that rogue car dismantlers are polluting the environment when they illegally buy old cars for cash.

Liberal Democrat environment spokesman Chris Davies is advising the public to sell old vehicles only to dealers registered by the Environment Agency as having approved treatment facilities (ATFs).

Licensed dismantlers, who have invested heavily in equipment to meet strict new standards, are struggling to stay in business in competition with illegal operators.

The End-Of-Life Vehicles Directive, which became UK law in 2003, requires potential contaminants such as oil, brake fluid, tyres and airbags to be removed from cars before they are scrapped.
