A Thurston High School teacher who resigned after allegations surfaced that she had sent nude photographs to a 15-year-old male student pleaded not guilty on Friday to two misdemeanor charges and was taken to jail.
Stephanie Rodakowski, 31, entered the pleas through her attorney at an arraignment hearing in Lane County Circuit Court. Judge Debra Vogt ordered Rodakowski taken into custody, and a sheriff's deputy transported her from the courtroom to the Lane County Jail.
Rodakowski was booked into the jail at 10:48 a.m. and was released about 5 p.m., according to jail records.
Rodakowski's lawyer, Hugh Duvall of Eugene, declined comment after the arraignment. A man and two women who sat in court with Duvall and Rodakowski but did not identify themselves also declined to talk about the case.
A warrant for Rodakowski's arrest was issued Thursday, one day after Lane County prosecutors filed charges of endangering the welfare of a minor and evidence tampering.
Police said they began an investigation in July, one day after Rodakowski told Springfield School District officials that a male student had stolen her cellphone and shared with other students a nude picture of her that he had found on the device.
Rodakowski later acknowledged that story was false, and admitted to an investigator that she had sent "a few" naked photos to the student earlier this year, police said.
She also said that she had once kissed the boy in her classroom and had exchanged a series of text messages with him that discussed sexual fantasies involving them, police said.
The evidence-tampering charge relates to an allegation that Rodakowski instructed the boy to delete all photos, messages and videos that she had sent him. The boy got rid of the content but took screen shots of a message from Rodakowski in which she mentioned sending him photos, and also pointed out that she is a 31-year-old married woman, police said.
Rodakowski taught English and worked nearly three years at Thurston before she resigned on July 16. She is due to return to court for a pretrial conference on Sept. 21.
Rodakowski could be sentenced to jail if convicted of the misdemeanor charges.
