Inorganic specialty chemicals and advanced materials company Rockwood Holdings Inc (NYSE:ROC) revealed on Monday plans to invest USD140m in a new lithium carbonate production plant in Chile.

Rockwood will build a 20,000 metric ton lithium carbonate plant, under the new investment programme, to be located at LeNegra, near the port of Antofagasta in northern Chile.

Concurrently with a USD75m expansion of its lithium production in the United States, which includes expansion of its brine pond system at Silver Peak, NV and construction of a battery grade lithium hydroxide plant and a global technical centre at Kings Mountain, NC the investment will increase total annual production capacity to 50,000 metric tons of lithium carbonate equivalent by end of 2013, the company added the US sites are expected to be on stream by spring 2012.
