Rockwell Switching Systems Division and Premisys Collaborate on Remote Connectivity for Call Center

FREMONT, Calif., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Premisys Communications (Nasdaq: PRMS) has signed a contract with Rockwell International Corporation's (NYSE: ROK) Switching Systems Division (SSD) under which Premisys will supply SSD with the IMACS networking product suite. The five-year, non-exclusive agreement will allow Rockwell to utilize BRITE technology products in the Rockwell remote call center solutions offered with Rockwell Spectrum and Galaxy Automatic Call Distributors (ACD's).

The BRX can handle both T1 and E1 interfaces, which provides international usages. The IMACS 2:1 voice compression enables more available circuits while simultaneously reducing the costs associated with those (leased line) connections, reducing user costs. IMACS redundancy features will ensure highly reliable call centers with maximum uptime. Rockwell will be the first to utilize the newly available ISDN "S" interface, developed by Premisys for use in multi-drop applications.

"The upgraded BRX technology allows our customers to continue to open remote call centers providing the features of a large center, at a lower cost than current solutions," stated Roger Sumner, Director of Product Development at Rockwell. "This combination gives our customers more flexibility and efficiency in choosing the locations for their call centers. Since the BRX supports international standards, customers can easily build world-wide ACD networks to provide follow-the-sun services."

"International networking has experienced explosive growth over the past several years," stated Bill Smith, Senior VP at Premisys. "This is a prime example of the cooperation between Premisys and its partners, to bring the most efficient network solutions to market. As the capacity and complexity of those networks increases, Premisys will continue to develop products incorporating new technologies to achieve our objectives of offering our customers price, performance and scaleability," he continued.

The Rockwell Spectrum and Galaxy ACD's utilize ISDN to enhance communications and lower network operating costs between geographically dispersed users. Using BRITE (Basic Rate ISDN Transmission Extension) technology, call center consoles can connect to a Premisys BRX anywhere in the world. Then, using T1 or E1 leased lines, the BRX connects the consoles to a Rockwell ISDN ACD. Since this T1 or E1 connection is transparent to the remote consoles, remote operators can take advantage of all of the sophisticated features used by operators directly connected to the ACD.

Using 4:1 D-channel compression, the Premisys IMACS BRX allows 25%-33% more BRI circuits to be extended per high-speed link than channel bank products. The BRX can be configured to support up to 56 users in a single chassis by consolidating four D channels onto a single time slot. Using this technology, up to ten BRI circuits can be extended over a single T1 line, (thirteen over E1), and with the addition of 2:1 ADPCM voice compression, as many as 17 BRI circuits can be extended over a single T1 line (24 over an E1 link.) Monitoring is available through SNMP agents and built-in diagnostics including integrated loopback generator, bit error rate tester, and tone generator. By using the Premisys IMACS BRX, Rockwell provides ISDN connectivity for up to 56 users, at a fraction of the cost of installing a full-scale ISDN switch.
