Byline: NEIL ATKINSON Head of News

MUSIC students from Kirklees College will have people rocking around the Christmas tree.

They are bringing out a new three-tracK EP next weeK and planning a festive gig.

It's certainly a novel way of having lessons.

Woof Trade Vol 1 - the first in a series of compilations showcasing the talents of music technology students - can be downloaded via iTunes from December 18.

It features three tracKs written and performed by KirKlees College music students and produced by music technology students.

The EP includes wistful acoustic tracK All The Little Things by up and coming local singer songwriter Tara Wolfe; Hurricanes by The Final Throes - a five piece slinKy FUNK band with a rocK vibe; and short and sweet nostalgic pop Girl It's You by three piece group The Shade. Music tutor Graham Lees said: "We hope this first release will allow our learners to get their songs out into the world and heard by the listening public. "It's a genuinely exciting process for the students to be involved in and gives them a real world insight into many aspects of the music industry."

The release of EP coincides with the college's annual XmastocK event at Bar 1.22, New Street, Huddersfield, from 7.30pm on Wednesday December 18.

XmastocK will showcase live music from KirKlees College students and is open to the public.

Bands taKing part in the live gig are Tara and the Wolves, MurKy Water and The Final Throes. KirKlees College houses professional level recording studios and rehearsal rooms, used for BTEC Extended Diploma in Music Technology level 3 and RocK School Music Diploma level 2, run at the Highfields Centre, Huddersfield. BarKer Records - a new record label run by music technology staff and students - is behind the EP release.

The label provides a platform for students and the wider community to release original songs worldwide.

Local bands and artists who are interested in featuring on a future compilation should contact the music department on 01484 437000.
