Roadway Express announces pricing changes.

AKRON, Ohio--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 22, 1996--Roadway Express, Inc. (NASDAQ: ROAD) announced today that effective 1/1/97 it will implement a general rate increase with an overall impact of approximately 5.7 percent. Additionally, Roadway will raise its minimum charge floor to $46.00 and adjust rates for specific lanes and certain connecting-line routes.

As previously announced, the fuel surcharge Roadway enacted on September 3, 1996 will remain separate from the motor carrier's general rate structure. The Company stated that since it cannot predict what near- or long-term fuel costs will be, the fairest way to address the issue with its customers is to keep the surcharge (which is based on the National Fuel Index) separate. That will allow for elimination of the surcharge when fuel costs return to normal levels.

Michael W. Wickham, President and CEO of Roadway Express explained, "This increase is necessary to ensure we can continue investment in the equipment, information systems, personnel and training that will allow us to provide the stable relationship and service levels our customers have come to expect from us."

"We are pleased to report that our ongoing network refinement and our use of improved information technologies and engineering concepts have helped reduce costs, reduce handling and shorten our transit times and improve delivery performance. We will continue our strategy to make Roadway Express the transportation leader by providing the most reliable, responsive and efficient services available throughout our fully developed international network," Wickham concluded.

Founded in 1930, Roadway Express, Inc., is one of the nation's leading less-than-truckload (LTL) motor carriers, providing service in two-day and beyond, regional, national and international markets. Headquartered in Akron, Ohio, Roadway is committed to offering the industry's most reliable, responsive and efficient transportation services between all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Japan, plus export services to 62 countries on five continents.
