Risk management. (Technology Tools).

Marsh Inc., the risk and insurance services firm, has brought out two new versions of its STARS risk management information system -- one designed for client/server applications and another for the Web.

The client/server release, known as STARS 8.0, offers a variety of new capabilities designed for organizations that self-administer claims, as well as for insurers and third-party administrators. The new features include the ability to create document-based audit trails and the option to automatically base policy premium amounts on the values from a named insured.

The Web version, known as STARS Web 8.0, offers new features that make it particularly accessible for users in remote locations who may not be familiar with risk management information systems. In addition to its new security and report management features, this version also offers a standalone application for creating robust incident entry templates in flexible decision-tree formats.

Both STARS 8.0 and STARS Web 8.0 offer the ability to run reports using data from multiple companies. Additional workflow enhancements include allowing users to divide and distribute reports using report "bursting." Users of both versions can. customize search fields according to their individual needs, and display both graphs and frequently visited Internet links directly on the home page.

Both new versions of STARS are fully compatible with most earlier releases.
