Ridgewater College.

RIDGEWATER COLLEGE IS A COMMUNITY AND TECHNICAL COLLEGE serving more than 5,500 students in the state of Minnesota on its campuses in Willmar and Hutchinson. It offers more than 100 programs that include transfer options and technical education. Ridge- water's AA degrees are based in the Minnesota Transfer Curriculum, a core group of credits guaranteed to transfer LO any public university in the state, and many of its technical programs also articulate to four-year universities.

Additionally, the college serves its community by partnering with local business and industry to provide customized and continuing education courses. Ridgewater is proud of its small class sizes, up-to-date technology, scholarship foundation, and its excellent graduation and job-placement rates. The school has earned accolades that include being cited as one of the top community colleges in the country by both the Aspen Institute and Washington Monthly magazine.

Among the career and technical education (CTE) programs at Ridgewater is cosmetology, which offers training that includes theoretical and practical work. The goal is to establish thorough, and complete knowledge of cosmetology and sound professional habits. The program consists of demonstrations, lectures, hands-on training and examinations, and it is structured so that the beginning of the program is primarily classroom work, with the latter portion being the actual application of their skills. Students participate in a clinical experience through working in the Ridgewater College Salon and Day Spa, where they are able to practice cutting, coloring, perms, styling, manicures, pedicures and skin treatments on actual clients.

The Ridgewater College associate degree in cosmetology is a 67-credit program that includes courses in hair care, cutting, coloring and design, as well as nail care and skin care. There is also an elective course in salon fundamentals for estheticians. According to Ridgewater, through this program students become proficient in skills such as deep-conditioning treatments, special-occasion hair styles, nail technology, and esthetics skin care and makeup.

The estheology certificate offered by Ridgewater is a 20-credit program that features Pre-clinic Skin Care, Salon Fundamentals for Estheticians, Salon Success I and II, as well as a clinical unit and license preparation. The advanced esthetics certificate requires courses in Advanced Esthetics I and II and an Advanced Esthetics Internship.

Ridgewater notes that its students are highly sought after by employers because of the school's history of graduating skilled stylists, and the survey of 2011 graduates would appear to back that claim, since it found that their employment rate was an impressive 100 percent. The training provided by Ridgewater College's cosmetology program clearly goes more than just skin deep, and it demonstrates that the success of CTE is more than just practical. It provides students with lifelong careers in which they help others look and feel better and that's truly a beautiful thing.
