Revved Up: Tested: Mazda MX-5 1.8i Sport.

Byline: With Scott PIECHA and Paul MYLES

ANYONE who doesn't like driving with the roof down is old before their time and should immediately give up motoring, writes PAUL MYLES.

Because when the sun is shining and you have a thoroughbred sportster like the MX-5 squirming around beneath your driving seat, you'll feel young no matter how many summers you have on your mileometer.

Yet the Mazda is far from a spartan driving experience - it's loaded with CD, ABS, remote central locking and even heated full leather seats. While there may be other sports cars in this class marginally better to drive, the specifications of the MX-5 are hard to ignore for the price. The 146 horsepower engine is punchy, the handling taut and there's even a decent boot.
