MAELSTROM, PC, Codemasters, pounds 29.99

VERDICT: *****

FAR future Real Time Strategy games are ten-a-penny and with rival Supreme Commander being praised to high heaven, Maelstrom will have to be pretty good to make a dent in the market. Sadly dreadful AI, route finding problems which have amazingly dogged this genre for years and pedestrian campaigns mean this is something of a disappointment.

BEN HURST FINAL FANTASY XII, PS2, Square Enix, pounds 39.99

VERDICT: *****

THERE is always something a bit special about a Final Fantasy game. Thankfully, this latest incarnation is no different. A variety of landscapes and more of the usual graphic brilliance are complemented by an improved AI with the one minor complaint of previous versions - the random battle - confined to history.
