TWELVE SHARP by Janet Evanovich (Headline pounds 11.99)

VERDICT: *****

THE latest in the best-selling series featuring bounty hunter Stephanie Plum is darker than its predecessors - but better than ever. Fans of the earlier novels will be delighted to know they find out more about other regular characters, like the mysterious Ranger. Newcomers can just enjoy the ride as Stephanie sets out to catch a killer and rescue a missing child. Exciting and amusing to boot. Bring on No 13!

MALINCHE by Laura Esquival (Simon & Schuster pounds 10.99)

THIS novelised biography attempts to retell the story of La Malinche, historically considered a traitor, who allowed Mexico to be conquered by the Spanish through her role as an interpreter and lover of the conquistador Hernan Cortes. The dialogue is stilted, which may have something to do with the translation, but it makes an interesting story ultimately unsatisfying.
