The family of freshwater fish Callanthiidae contains two genera, say Anderson, Johnson, and Baldwin: the genus Callanathias with seven species and the genus Grammatonotus with six nominal species. They describe characteristics that distinguish callanthiids from other percoids, that distinguish Callanathias from Grammatonotus, and that distinguish the seven species of Callanathias from each other. The also provide a key to the Callanthias species, and comments on other aspects of the biology of the species of the genus. ([umlaut] Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
