MY SECOND cousin in South Africa is trying to trace some of her relatives. Her paternal grandfather was a Freeman of the City of Newcastle, as a result of serving in the Boer War. His name was David Alexander Kemp and he had two brothers, Victor and Percy. Percy had one son also named Percy, and a blind sister who had children.

There is also a connection with Tiverton Avenue in the West End.

My cousin is Mrs Gail Brand, of 34, Grantchester, 122, St Andrew's Street, Durban 4001, South Africa.

WITH reference to the Suez Canal Zone Emergency 1951/54.

I've written a book, Suez: The Hidden Truths, which details those turbulent years of the early fifties in the Suez Canal Zone of Egypt, where thousands, of mostly National Servicemen, were posted to defend a strip of water against an hostile foe in absolutely appalling conditions.

Moreover, although-there were many lads killed who were only in their teens, we-were denied a campaign medal ( this I've tried to address.

However, thanks to a small band of Suez activists, and after 50 years, this miscarriage of justice has been righted against a contentious Whitehall and overwhelming odds.

Incidentally, many Suez veterans ( all in their seventies ( are delighted with the award of the belated medal, but it really is a travesty that it wasn't issued at the time and in particular for those lads who didn't make it home and others who have passed on over the years since. For details, tel. 01772 322717.
