Return to Xanadu. (the Buzz).

WHY DO GAYS STILL LOVE XANADU, the 1980 roller-disco musical starring Olivia Newton-John and Gene Kelly? "This is the queerest movie that's not actually about being gay," notes Annie Dorsen, who's now directing the Los Angeles stage play Xanadu Live!

Dorsen came to the production with impeccable kitsch credentials: After noting she had staged Grease 2 at the Yale Cabaret, the directors of the 2000 Williamstown Theatre Festival dared her to recreate Xanadu--in just nine days. Executive producer Amy Pietz, who played lesbian on the sitcom Muscle, saw the Williamstown Xanadu Live! and knew she had to bring this "very loving parody" back to Hollywood.

Newton-John says she's "thrilled" about XL! (particularly since part of the proceeds go to breast cancer research), and Dorsen hopes the show captures "that late-'70s-early-'80s moment right before Reagan, right before AIDS, this moment when the [gay] subculture might have become the culture."
