Retailer to open in Paterson.

Arco Distributing, Inc. will open a department store in the downtown Paterson building formerly occupied by Jacobs Department Store.

The landmark store, which had carried the Jacobs name for 60 years, will re-open as Wertheimer's Deparment Store after renovations are completed.

Arco negotiated a 15-year lease for approximately 90,000 squre feet on three floors of the five-story Main Street building as part of a bankruptcy re-organization of Grand Central Stores, Inc. Grand Central had operated Jacobs since 1985.

Arco, based in New York City, operates three other Wertheimer's Department Stores in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. Another Arco department store in Queens operates as Kings Department store. Paterson will be Arco's fifth department store.

Arco's announcemnt coincides with nearby construction of Main Street Square -- a 33-store, three-level indoor mall -- and the recent opening of a new highway ramp that connects Interstate 80 directly with the Downtown shopping hub.
