Resources: industry data & export leads.
* 1990 Software Industry Factbook. For those who gobble up industry data, this 390-page opus is the equivalent of a five-course feast. It contains mini-profiles and rankings of 150 micro software companies (including videogame companies, subsidiaries, and large-system vendors who don't qualify for our own Soft.letter 100 rankings), as well as public company financial reorts, overviews of major markets, and summaries of the top news events of the year. The statistical data is also available as a 1-2-3 worksheet.
Software Industry Factbook, Digital Information Group, 51 Bank St., Stamford, Conn. 06901; 203/348-2751. Price: $395; data disk, $495 extra.
* SPA International Resource Guide. As domestic sales growth curves begin to flatten, high-growth overseas markets are beginning to look increasingly attractive. The first edition of the IRG, compiled by Randy Green's GreenTree Associates and published by the Software Publishers Association, is an incredibly detailed overview of what it takes to crack every major export market -- including market statistics, distributor profiles, useful business contacts, local publications, government and trade agencies, shipping and export rules, localization requirements, and bibliographies of useful articles. If you're even thinking about the international market, this is the place to start.
SPA International Resource Guide, Software Publishers Assoc., 1101 Conn. Ave., NW, Washington, D.C. 20036; 202/452-1600. Price: Members--$350-425; Non-members--$1750
